50 hp 2stroke timing

I just rebuilt my 50 hp. mariner..the starter cranks..engages..but the flywheel only turns once before it stalls out the starter..does it need timed?.. i've never rebuilt an outboard before but have done a few cars.. any and all help in trying to get this boat timed so i can get it in the water before the ice forms on the lakes, would be appreciated
