Oil consumption issue

I recently acquired a 2000 150 HP Johnson that seems to have excessive 2 stroke oil exhaust smoke on cold start-up and during warm-up. After it has been driven and "blown out" 2 cycle smoke seems normal. Are these outboards known for this or is there likely a problem with the oil injection system?

Re: Oil consumption issue

If you can get an OEM service manual there are oil consumption tests in it. A fuel restriction will also cause you a high oil consumption. Testing all this will be in the manual.

if oil tank is higher than carbs, oil can siphon into the bowls.

The oil reservior is not higher than the carbs.

any kind of rough idea how much oil should be consumed in 10 hours of moderate cruise?
I don't yet have a manual.

Re: Oil consumption issue

I don't feel like doing the math tonight but it should work out to be a 50:1 ratio meaning 1 pt oil to 6 gal fuel even tho you have an OMS on it.
