Question 1. Do I need to use a specific boat paint, or can I use automotive (or auto heavy duty) with a clear coat to paint the boat exterior?

Question 2. I want to make my own windshield. Is there any rules stating height, angle? Also can I use plexiglass? If I go glass can it be plate, tempered or needs to be safety? And thickness required?

Question 3. Is there any tint law for boats?

I live in Northern Illinois if that makes a difference.

Re: windows, paint and tint questions

Ithurtz, I am not familiar with Ill. laws but here is my 2 cents. You can use acrylic but do not go with plexiglass. Go with Lexan Marguard. Lexan can NOT be broken and can be drilled without any worry of breaking. Even the 1/8" thickness can be put in a break and bent. The Marguard will reduce the scratching, and you can even get the UV resistant kind.
No plate glass. You should go safety, either laminated or tempered. With either choice, you can them with a tint. Tinting is not illegal but I don't reccommend applied tint as the wet conditions will prevent it from lasting. No rules reguarding height or style. Most thickness is 3/16" or 1/4". Some boats have 'em, some don't.
Again, check with local laws but that is the way I understand it.
