I'm sure if you inquire with the store they have damaged ones that they would donate. I always see them abandonned on the side of the highways and in backlanes.

Hmm,, My wife works at a grocery store...

I'm gonna ask her what they do with busted carts.

they also make good grills. just load your food up across the bottm and roll it over the campfire. When the food's cooked, roll it over to the picnic table. Put your dishes in it, roll it down to the creek, and swish it around some.

Doh! I just spent an afternoon making one from the iboats plans. Just think of all the time and trouble I could have saved by using one of those shopping carts!!!!!

Shopping carts are very, very expensive. I doubt any store will give them away unless they are tore up like a vehicle that ran over it or so.

I poated the use of a shooping cart modified to make a stand for my O/D but I would preffer one with the bottom cage support to be modified as well to support the drive at the actual hieght of the O/D right off the transon possibly with some adjustable camps. This would be perfect for removal,repair and installation.

According to Wiki, they cost grocery stores about $75 to $150 each. Theft is a big deal to them and on a worldwide basis, its about an 800 million dollar per year problem.

While surfing this, I saw a couple of sites that sell new and reconditioned carts on a retail basis. Prices seem to range from under a hundred bucks, to quite a bit over that.

I'd rather spent a small amount of money at the big box store for some 2 x 4s and some cheap casters.

a new shopping cart goes for between 300-400 bucks and the borken ones get fixed/parted out to keep them around longer. I worked at a small grocery store all through college and collected stolen carts for them on the side (still collect stolen carts) Really wish people understood this as it is extreemly difficult for small stores....

that sucks i spent a whole day last weekend making a shopping cart out of my outboard stand!

I have seen shopping carts in two different auctions.
Local stores going out of business.

Go to your local scrap metal yard. People push stuff in to sell in the buggies then leave them. We have to recycle 10-12 of them a week. BTW we have called the stores to see if they wanted to retrieve them and they don't think its worth the time.
