So I just pulled the engine out of the '99 sea ray with a 3.0 Mercruiser & alpha 1 gen 2. I am about to put a 3.0 out of a '97 sea ray, same outdrive. I am noticing the cables that engage the outdrive that are mounted on the engine are mounted differently.

On the '99 they are mounted on the side and the '97 they are mounted on the top.

Anyone have any insight that might help me out? I am moving the working engine to the '99 boat wednesday so i'll have more of an idea then if i can just bolt it on the top like it was or not.

Thanks in advance!

Just take all of the parts of your old engine and mount them to the new engine to match. I think the difference is the stamped steel valve cover uses different shifting components/locations than the cast aluminum one...

Do you have the serial numbers for both engines? If so can you post them?

Here is a link to the service manual for the 3.0. It should help with your install...

It only goes to 97 though...

'99 serial numbers (the engine I am removing, but plan on leaving most everything else, this is the engine with the cables that engage drive mounted on the side)

Engine - 0L318282
Transom - 0L503307
Drive - 0L408734

'97 serial numbers (the good engine, has the cables mounted on the top)
Engine - 0K029485
Transom - 0K131246
Drive - 0K082691
