Battery switch confusion

I currently have 2 new batteries on an 1, 2, all, off selector switch. The engine Yamaha F225 will start on the 1 and all but not on the 2. The = on the engine is wired to the common on the selector. Do I need to jump the negatives on the two batteries???

If the negative cable from each battery is connected to the engine block, NO -- it is not necessary to jumper the two negatives.
