My motor will crank, idle, and come out of the gate strong. But in about 200 yards, it sounds like it is starving for fuel. My primer was old, so I replaced it and primer still will not stay pumped up. Is this a problem with the tank, the new line, or a fuel pump. In the yard it will crank, idle and run, but will idle low until i pump on the primer, then it will idle on up to normal, but then down again.

Rebuild your fuel pump, and make sure you have no contaminants in the tank.

Re: 1986 80 HP merc fuel starving

I have 90hp one with the same year and mine had the same problem, it runs fine for the first 10-15 mins then start choking then won't start again till i crank it a few times. I clean the fuel tank, change fuel filter then start it up. Now it idles at 1300 rmp instead of 700 like before. I'm not sure what the problem is. I'll try to correct the timing first then i'll look into the fuel pump. Please post if you try the fuel pump and the problem's gone..
