Lower Unit Will Not Go Back On!!!!!

So I took off the lower unit on my 2002 150 and replaced the impeller and gaskets with no problems. Today I went to put it back on and it will not go back on. I can get it about an inch from being on but it will not go any farther. I have turned the shaft, turned the flywheel, twisted, pushed, pulled - I have tried everything I could think to get this up and I just cannot do it. I shined a flashlight up and cannot see any kind of obstruction.

This is my first time doing this with a Mercury. Others in the past I had no trouble, but this one has me beat:mad:.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Lower Unit Will Not Go Back On!!!!!

I had the same problem on a alpha 1 gen 1 . First make sure helm is in foward gear and gear shaft on lower unit is in foward gear. on lower unit i had to pull up on gear shaft on lower unit with needele nose pliers and turn shaft all the way clockwise. will not pull up much or turn to much.Second make sure the brass gear tube is in foward . Idid this by looking at the locking pin and used common sense on how it push in if it was forward .THIRD line up tubes and gear shaft try not to knock it out of gear. I hope this helps.:)

don't force it . when everything is lined up right it will go back together with little more than finger pressure

Probably just one component not aligning perfect, dont give up....i know those things get heavy and there is just so many working seconds of being a weight lifter, i make sure both lower end and upper end are in neutral before mine goes together, the shift shaft tends to jam in splined socket

Thanks for all the responses.

I finally got this thing back in after working with it all day. I had to keep turning the prop and wiggling the lower unit while I pushed it up. I finally hit the sweet spot and everything went smooth after that.:D

You don't turn the prop. Turn the flywheel.

The best way to install the gearcase is with the motor in neutral. So, in order to align the driveshaft, one would need to turn the flywheel.

Re: Lower Unit Will Not Go Back On!!!!!

take a flashlight and shine it up into the bottom end of the engine. If you see a brass "washer" in the way of the drive shaft hole, you need to line that up first, something long and skinny to get up in there to move it with, maybe with a little grease on the end, so when you get it where you want it, it stays in place. it's a booger when that washer moves, but all hope is not lost. I had some trouble with mine after replacing the impellar as well. and what your explaining sounds a lot like what happened to me.

hope that helps you.
