I am ready to wire up the switch plate cable from the motor on my 1956 25526 Lark 30. I have the relay box that came with it. I spent $67 on a manual and it is useless as the very skimpy addendum section specific to this motor shows a different wiring set up. Mine has 8 wires in the cable, manual shows 4. The motor cable plugs into a nylon plug to the cable for the switch plate. I have in the cable to the switches (all I am going to use is a push button for the choke and an off/on/start key ignition switch):
1 larger ga. (10?) solid green wire (that wire goes to the side of the sol. that the pos. battery cable goes to.
1 larger ga. (10?) that is solid brown (that wire looks like it is unused in the sol. box.
1 red with a white stripe (16 ga for the rest listed?)
1 solid white
1 solid gray
1 solid black
1 black with white stripe
1 light tan solid

Anyone have any ideas on which are used for the starter and which for the choke?

The Lark 30 I sold only had 4 wires, 1 for battery ground, 1 from solenoid to starter, 1 for choke and 1 for ignition kill

white is for the start solenoid

red-white is for the choke

Green is the 12V wire

Don't forget that the '56 motor is a 6 volt system

Sounds like you have a harness for a later model motor. Probably a 12 volt system. Look on the solenoid and see if it says 12 volts - a 6 volt solenoid only has 3 posts, 2 large and 1 small. A 12 volt has 4 posts. If it's a 12 volt harness, you can use it on the 6 volt starter, just don't crank it too long. You will fry the 6 volt choke solenoid with 12 volts, so you'll either have to not use the automatic choke or get a 12 volt choke solenoid. It's possible the previous owner already converted everything to 12 volts - you should check with him to see. Once you determine what you have, we can go from there. The 6 volt only has 4 wires going to the dash: Green, black, red and white. If you need the wiring diagram for a 6 volt system, PM me with your e-mail address.

Don't be complaining about your $67 manual. It is correct, and you are trying to use an incorrect junction box & cable.

It sounds like you have closer to this:

Re: 56 evinrude 30 hp wiring

Thanks for all the help. The solenoid does have 4 terminals not 3. Could well be newer but the motor cable certainly looks original. Good info on the choke solenoid, I hadn't thought about that. I will be using 12v series 58 battery. When I restored my 52 Chris I used a 12v and it didn't hurt the starter - had to have a ballast resister for the points if I remember correctly.
