I have a 1998 3.0 mercruiser that has been running very poorly and sometimes not at all. The trouble has been narrowed down to the timing and the module under the dist. cap has been found out to be junk. Question what is the difference between buying a module meant for the GM automotive 3.0 vs getting an actual mercruiser part. Would there be a problem with the spark advancing properly in the GM one?
A test was done with the old one following the timing procedure and it would not advance. From idle to 3000 rpm the advance stayed the same. What else could it be if not this module?
Thank you
Todd

There is no automotive equivalant for that engine and ignition. The 3.0L engine was NEVER used in a car. The modules are designed for marine use.

The auto module, even though they look identical, are not. The car one is designed to interface with a PCM,(computer) while marine 3.0L is a stand-alone unit.
