I am new to the boating world. just tonight I bought a 1970 Alumacraft 12' v-hull and trailer for $250. The guy was moving across country and wanted to get rid of it quick. I am just wondering what size motor it will hande, how much weight it can hold, do i need a long or short shaft motor. thanks guys

more info would help, but see if there is a uscg tag. it will give info on it.

my guess is that it will need a short shaft and no more than 10hp.

Welcome to iboats!

If it's a '70, I doubt there is a capacity plate. But 10 HP is the usual max for that type and size boat as the Mr. Grog said.

my first boat was a 71 alumacraft vhull with a 6hp evinrude fisherman. I used to borrow my father-in-laws 9.9 johnson all the time. the 6hp was ok, just couldnt get anywhere in a hurry. the 9.9 was perfect, obviously untitled capabilities depending on state, but the 9.9 was almost fast enough to get it on plane, if i could have trimmed it out it just may have. Small outboards are expensive, pick up a used 9.9, toss a new impeller and change the lower unit oil and you are good to go.

Alumacraft made some awesome little aluminum boats, im definitly in the market for another one to tag along with my webbcraft for limblining and camping...

no uscg tag on that bad boy. look on the transom very upper right hand corner on the outside, almost hidden under the lip of the transom. if your lucky a HIN will be located there. but probably too short to be usefull.
