40 HP Mercury ELPTO Problem

My 2001 Mercury 40 hp outboard quit running while on a slow cruise. When crank case was opened the one crank shaft needle bearing had broken. Engine has had light use on pontoon boat in a 350 acre lake. Part of the broken bearing was made of plastic. Replacement bearing now has no plastic.
Has anyone had this problem and has Mercury done anything about it?
