Hello,

I just purchased a water pump replacement kit for my 4 stroke 9.8hp Tohatsu (2006). I assume that this is a pretty straightforward repair. Can someone help me out with basic instructions? Any idea how long this might take?

Is this correct?

1. Place engine in Reverse
2. Remove 4 bolts of lower unit
3. Replace Impeller/Water Pump Housing
4. Reinstall lower unit

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Are there only 4 bolts that need to be removed?

And should the shift lever be in reverse...or does it matter?

The nearest Tohatsu repair shop is about an hour from here and they said the labor would be 1.5 hours for the repair. I don't have a manual yet but I think I can figure this out.

Thanks!

4 bolts to release the LU, the lower stainless roll pin for the shift linkage, and then once apart, the bolts for the wp housing. You can be in any gear to take it apart, just remember that you have to align the shift rod and reinsert the roll pin when you put it back together.

You play with the shift in order to line up the coupler so you can remove and then insert the roll pin. Depending on the initial adjustment the correct position can vary slightly.
