What Year Is My Johnson 150

I have a Johnson 150 with a Sea Drive and there is no model code anywhere on the engine. I was told by the previous owner that it is a 92. I ordered a 92 manual and it does not match. If anyone can tell me what year it is from these pictures, I sure would appreciate it so I could order the correct manual. Pretty soon, I'm going to have a small library of manuals.

That engine is a crossflow. They quit making them after the 1991 model year. Post the model number of your engine (not the serial #.) The production year hides inside the model number of that engine.

How about any information on the quarter-sized casting plug on the top cylinder? It's painted over, but may have a serial or model number stamped on it. Some models have the same information as on the normal transom-mounted serial tag.

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

He said he could not find any model numbers anywhere .
mine is an xp tracker 150 and it looks almost identical to yours mines an 89
a good way to narrow it down would be on one of the parts websites that
show diagrams and the breakdown of all the parts to the motor . My model number was on the backside of the midsection if my motor isnt tilted up i cant see it because its concealed by the tilt/trim unit

actually the only difference i can see between mine and yours from the pictures is the cowling and on the right side your yours your overheat sensor only has one wire coming out of it and mine has two everything else looks the same im sure there were a lot of years that were similar but maybe it can help you narrow it down more sorry i couldn't help more

1987-1989 without 40 amp stator...gosh I would hate to try and remove one bolt on that engine

This is a picture of the casting plug found on the top of most crossflow blocks. On this particular engine, it may be the serial number. In some cases this number is useful to track back the year. Earlier year engines also have the model number on this plug-which specifically identifies the model year.

Not that it helps any, but I've got about the same dilema with my supposedly '90 Johnson 200. They guy I bought it from claimed that the powerhead was a factory remanufactured unit. I've checked part numbers against the online parts databases and nothing matches. There's a good database at lmmarine.com, you can enter a part number and it will list all the engines which that part was used on.

I think that is a 2.5L around 1985. The cowl is from another motor. It's possible that the whole motor has been attached to to the Sea Drive brackets.

Here's the link for the manuals; the 2.5L with the 9/10 amp ignition is the closest match to your existing setup except that yours has the newer powerpack: http://www.crowleymarine.com/omc_sea_drive_parts.cfm

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

Thanks for all the responses.

Looks like I will have to get to work by tracing part numbers.
Here are pictures of some numbers I found.

Head Cover/Water Jacket 328325 D2
Head Casting 32800
Block Casting or Engine Model?? 415921
Soft Plug on Head 392868

I feel the same way regarding dis assembly of this beast. Most of the bolt heads look like they would twist right off if you put a wrench to them. I hope I will never have to touch them!!

Those look casting numbers, will not be much help when you start looking for parts numbers.

I'm sure this is not the original cowling. All the foam on the inside is all new and it's very clean. There is only one small scratch on the outside.

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

I checked the numbers on the LMMarine site and all of them are legit numbers except for the 415921 number. I've narrowed the search from about 1984 to 1992.

The flatback was a 2.5L; I believe that they did not make the Sea Drive with that engine after 1985.

Here are some close ups of the electrical. That probably varied more from year to year than anything else.

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

I may have solved the mystery.

I found a part number on the power pack. It's 584043. It looks like this was used only on the 1991 Johnson 150.

You've done some nice investigative work. This method of deduction can work if you are patient and know how to read parts lists. Congrats!

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

Thanks, but I'm not convinced yet.

I found a blown up diagram of a 91 engine and it doesn't match. So, I'm still looking.
