Year of Mariner 70 HP

Hi,

Could anyone please identify the year of manufacture of my Mariner outboard (at least that is what the serial number plate says - but it has a Mercury cowling). I believe it to be late 70's or eatly 80's, and think it is a 70 HP. It's a 3-cyl engine.

The engine serial number is 6228858, and the number on the plate matches the number on the frost plug. I am having ignition trouble and need to get a stator and rectifier (both test bad) and need to make sure I'm getting the right parts.

I have a Clymer Mercury manual and it seems to match up to the Mariner - not much difference??? I know Mercury built the Mariner engine, but not sure how identical the models are.

Any help most appreciated.

Thanks

Alrighty... As mountainsheel suggested, there are some good serial number cross references out there. According to MaxRules.com, you have a 1982 model motor. Based on that you can go to the Crowley Marine or West Marine web sites to get more information on the parts you need to order.

The rectifier appears to be about $45.00.

The stator assembly appears to be about $180.00.

Granted there are other places you buy them from which may be cheaper. If nothing else, this will hopefully get you the part numbers you need so you can look. Happy hunting! :)

Thanks very much. This helps a great deal. I suspected the motor was approximately this age. I have found a good source of parts in Canada at marinemanifold.com. They have a huge selection of OEM, Sierra, Mallory and CDI components at reasonable prices. They also have a US based site as well.
