Having trouble getting the bolts out to remove the gear housing and get to the water pump. It feels like the rear bolt will break off before it comes out.
Does anyone have advice on how to remove stuck bolts. There is not enough room to use an impact driver that you hit with a hammer.

WD-40 in my experience works well for situations like that... try to soak the area so it sinks into the threads, Repeat as many times as neccesary til it breaks loose the right way. Don't just muscle it out.

WD 40 is useless. Buy either kroil/pb blaster/marvel mystery oil. let it soak in for awhile, like over night. Try tightening first then loosening.

Hey Yankee48

+1 on PBlaster

I have good results with a 87 BMW 325i with a aluminum head. Exhaust bolts were in bad, but a couple of rounds of PBlaster and heat and they came out. I would warm the area up then shoot some PBlaster so it's barley smoked a bit. Then I didn't break it free right after the heat but when it cooled. I think the heat really lets the PBlaster or whatever penetrating stuff you use get down to were it needs to be.

Makes sense. An old mech showed me a trick for brake lines. heated it up and poured cold water on it. It made the rust explode.???
Marvel mystery oil has served me well.

Thanks to all of you who replied. After I posted my question I searched old posts for stuck bolts, and found a lot of suggestions. The best being "don't be afraid of heating with a propane torch." I had already used pb blaster, and after heating the bolt and letting it cool a few times, it started to loosen and I turned it back and forth until I got it out. I'm learning more about working on outboards than I expected.

Hello again Yankee48 :D

Glad there hear ya got that sucker out! Breaking, drilling, extracting then re-threading sux!!! And yup this place is cool for learning big time. There a site called ScreamAndFly.com too. Alot of the stuff there is squeezing extra power outta a block and racing stuff but you'll be suprised they have general knowledge stuff there too.

Normally, most of the bolts that hold on the gearcase are really studs and nuts. Worse comes to worse, they can unthread from the housings. The rearmost bolt was an exception. I would think heat and penetrating oil would get it.

Exactly how long was it from the last waterpump service?
