I have a retrofit Mercruiser 4.3L - about 2000, I think.
I pulled in for gas this past weekend with 1/4 of a tank on board. After filling up, the motor would crank, but not start. Checked for spark - good. Took the spark arrestor off and noticed no spray of gas.
The motor would immediately start with a spray of ether, but would peter out with either no gas being sprayed, or very intermittent spray.
Removed, cleaned and refilled the fuel filter, and attached an outboard tank of gas and pumped with the bulb to provide a little back pressure through the filter. Still no joy.
I can hear the pump running when I turn on the ignition, although I think it sounds a little different.
I'm thinking it must be the fuel pump or regulator - but why would it quit so abruptly, with no previous indication that it was failing?
The whole pump regulator assembly is in an incredibly inaccessible location. If I do install a new pump and regulator, is there any reason why I shouldn't relocate it to the wall of the sump, exposed, where I can get at it? Would I just have to re-route the fuel lines from filter to pump assembly, and from pump to the injector assembly? - and re-route, what looks like a two-wire electrical harness, to the pump?
Finally - sorry for the long post - If I put a pressure gauge on the line to the injector assembly and test for pressure, will that enable me to distinguish between a bad pump and a bad regulator? What pressure should I expect?
Thanks for any help.
