I have a 1983 evinrude 9.9. It will usually start fine on initial start up and run for awhile or until I shut it off but then it will not start again until it has sat for a couple hours. It seems like there is no spark, plugs have been changed. Does anyone know how to test coil and power pack? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: 1983 evinrude 9.9 no spark

1. disconecd cables going from shortening switch(the end of this cables is mounted between side coils, so unscrew one botl and relase cable end) and check if there is spark.
2. if steel there is no spark, check conection betwen coils and spark plug.sometimes it can loose,or plug cap can be loose, or cable mounting on coils can be bad
3.if conection is good.get one side coil(24$) and check saprk.if its not helping, so powerpack is dead-get new one-74$
Its my advice

I would get yourself a spark tester and the next time it gives you trouble check it right then and there. Always start with the simple/inexpensive stuff and once you prove something then you can start buying parts. The tester I'm speaking of allows you to adjust the gap. Adjust it to 3/8 of an inch and look for a blue to white spark that is very snappy. If you have that you have other problems not spark related. Best of luck. Rick.
