I have a 1973 Johnson 85 HP
I want to wire a tachometer and voltage guage off the ignition switch.

I already blew one fuse...so guess it is time to ask for some help before I do some real damage.

The remote control has a ground screw labeled "Tachometer Ground".
Can I run a ground wire from the tachometer ground screw in the remote control the tach, and then to the voltage guage?

I am not planning to use the fuse panel...all the accessories are run through the fuse panel and attached to the deep cell battery. Should I wire in a fuse between the ignition and the tach?

In words, here is what I am trying to do...should this work?
Positive = Ignition to Tachometer to Voltage guage
Ground = Ground screw on remote control to tachometer to voltage guage

Thanks

Make sure that is a good ground. Then connect power leads to the purple wire on the ignition switch.

That depends entirely on having the correct tachometer, which would be a universal with a 6p setting.

Don't let external voltage ride the gray wire or you will destroy your rectifier.

The voltage gauge can also be connected to the A post (purple positive wire).

That is correct. Take the Positive from the "A" terminal (purple) on the ignition switch so it is only "hot" when the key is turned on.

Re: Instrument Guage Wiring

Thanks everyone...rewired the guage, and it is working great.

Prior owner must have switched out the motor and never hooked up the tachometer to the new wiring.

I appreciate all the great advice on this forum.
