I am new to this boating thing and I need to know what kind of oil I should use for my OMC V6 155 hp engine and what type of battery do I need as well. Thanks for any advice here.

Re: Engine oil and battery

Howdy,

Use what your owners manual suggests or any other oil you like. Just about everything has been tried.

There's a "What kind kind of oil do I use" thread here just about every week that turns into a "here's what I use" "argument" and if you do a search, you'll find that everyone uses every kind of oil out there with satisfactory results.

If you want to use a "Marine Specific" oil, use Mercury 25W-40 or similar..... it's an NMMA FC-W certified oil . If you want to know more, click on the previous highlighted text.

You can use just about any good battery Most people like a "Marine" type battery.

I like sealed gelled batteries (like Optima) because they don't leak getting bounced around in a boat. They cost more but they last longer.

Cheers,
