84 OMC Stringer upper case cap removal

I removed the top cover, with the fill plug and cannot get it reinstalled, the gears match up with the flat spot on the matching gear, but cant get the shoulder and o ring to seat down in. It came off easy, but not going on as easy I dont want to force anything to hard.Any clues out there?

As long as the steering gears are lined up and its on the dowels, its just the o-ring holding it up....smack it with a dead blow or rubber mallet...

Sometimes wiggling it back and forth while pressing down helps. Also, if you can get it lined up enough and down enough to where you can start the bolts, you can just torque them down and it's pull it together.

I really doubt it's tight enough to make a difference, but you could remove the dipstick while putting the top back on to let out any trapped air in there.
