In search of a switch for my 1972 Johnson Motor, information below. Its part number 385253 if that helps. Can?t seem to find any of these and I know they are obsolete but in hopes of finding something. Does anyone know of a good source to purchase one. I'd even by the whole remote control if I had to. I'm not sure if this is a hydro electric or just plain electric. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you are looking for a shift switch. Look on EBay for a new remote - even if you do find an NOS switch as a separate unit, it will probably cost a fortune.

Re: 1972 100HP Johnson Switch

I have looked on ebay and thus the reason for me posting on this forum. In hoped of finding either a whole used remote control or the actual part. Was hoping someone would know of either a marine parts place that has a wide array of stock or a boat salvage yard that has it in their yard. Thanks.

How can one determine what controls would actually work with this motor. Say perhaps there was one listed but not the same year. Thanks.

As far as I can tell, there were only two switches with and without kill switch. The one with kill switch had five wires, you can just use the three you need.

If you find a possible candidate, find out what year and model it is.

Look it up on the on-line Johnson parts list.

If the diagram of the remote is the same as yours, you should be good to go.

You could do this work ahead of time - look at the parts catalog for models that use the same remote. Try adjacent years ('71 or '73 100HP) or adjacent models within the same year (e.g. '72 85 or 125)

'72 was the last year for electric shift so no newer than '72. If I had to hedge a guess....I'd say '69-'72 would work. Don't quote me :p

Hydro-Electric and Electramatic switches look alike, but are different inside and not interchangeable.

I have a couple of controls you can have for $2 each. Of course the switches aren't any good. That's the chance you take when buying used ones.

P.S. Just kidding, I wouldn't sell the junk switches.

Re: 1972 100HP Johnson Switch

Your motor has hydroelectric shift. The Johnson version is a white remote, with the "hydroelectric" on it. There is a black plug version and a yellow plug version - yours should be the yellow plug version.

You can use the ERude version, which has push buttons for the shifting duties, but you have to be careful to get the right one. As was indicated earlier, the are remotes that look just like the hydroelectric version, but aren't & you can not interchange them.

Where do you purchase these? Is there a model type that i should be asking for? is there another year that I could replace out my current remote control with? I have found the parts but am contemplating out the whole remote control. Thanks.

BTW, ignore the last two photos that the seller has linked to his listing - they are of a Mercury remote and wiring harness.

You can send me a PM, include your e-mail address. However, I think I made it clear that I don't have any good shift switches.

Re: 1972 100HP Johnson Switch

rumads, go out and look at your plug. I think it is black.

Yellow Plugs = Hydroelectric with Mag CD ignition
Red Plugs = Mechanical shift with Mag CD
Black Plugs = Hydroelectric with amplified battery ignition

Neutral circuit has nothing to do with it. It's the combination of shift and ignition.

Re: 1972 100HP Johnson Switch

I stand corrected - he has a '72 100hp, which has battery CD. I'm getting my threads confused and thought he had a '72 65hp, which has magneto CD.

Re: 1972 100HP Johnson Switch

Can someone please explain to me what this means by the plug colors and how it affects my situation. Very new at this but very inquisitive and want to learn. Some day this boat will be running and I would like to be able to start identifying problems that could be foreseen in the future. Also since this boat hasn't really been out in the water for the past 4 years what are some things that I should do in order to get this ready for the next springs boating season. Thanks again for all your help.
