If you are talking about the temp sender in the cylinder head, no, it will not have any effect on the starting of the engine.
If your engine will not start check the basics first, compression and spark check. If those are ok, move on to the fuel delivery system.

Re: question about temp switch 84 johnson 50hp

If you overheated it enough to melt the temp sensor, I think a compression test is a must. Borrow a compression tester and check it, might be your source of the problem.

If you overheated the mtr enough to melt the temp sender wire you probably blew a head gasket and who knows what else. Start with a compression test first and go from there.

They don't list compression specs, to many variables. I would hope to see something in the 100-125 range, within 10% of each other.

Re: question about temp switch 84 johnson 50hp

How did you get a compression reading with the plug in. Remove both plugs and check compression for accurate readings.
By the numbers you posted you have a compression problem on #1 cylinder.
I would remove the cylinder head and check the cylinder for damage. Maybe you will luck out and only have a damaged head gasket.

Re: question about temp switch 84 johnson 50hp

Looks like the head gasket was leaking between the cylinders. Make sure head is flat, itstall new head gasket, torque to spec, run engine to normal operating temp, retorque head gasket and then recheck compression.

is that it?

18 to 20 foot pounds is correct, to be tightened in the following sequence.

8...10

5....6

1....2

4....3

8....7
