MerCruiser Shifter sticks, wont shift into gear

2002 MerCruiser shifter. During cold engine starts I use the Hi rpm engagement to start the boat. The center button sticks in. I try to pull it out, but it is sticking inside the shifter. It will not allow the boat to shift into gear. I have tried spraying WD 40 into it. If I shake and rattle the shifter it will eventually engage in gear. It took about 30 minutes of trying to get it working on the ramp today. Anyone have any advise on a repair?

Mine sometimes sticks, but on the way in, not out. I've got to jiggle the lever while pushing the button. Take it apart and troubleshoot. It seems like a pretty simple mechanical device.
