voltage dropping to zero on the gauge

My ocean pro 150 starts normal but on my console gauge shows zero when I crank and then slowly gets up to 13 volts. I have never noticed this before. I wanted to know if its normal for the voltage to drop so much on the gauge. If anyone has any information I would appreciate a response. Thanks

Guage should show battery voltage, I doubt you battery is going to "0" volts, I would check the guage itself.

gauge is good because it goes back to 13 after start.....I wonder if its a problem with my grounds on the console? Thanks for the reply

Re: voltage dropping to zero on the gauge

I would check the voltage at the battery with a good volt meter. The volt meter in your counsel could be off due to the fact OMC had probs with those gauges. And yes, it could be bad grounds somewhere or poor and corroeded conections on the incoming side of the gauge.

Re: voltage dropping to zero on the gauge

It isn't truly 0 volts or the starter wouldn't crank. I'm guessing bad igniton switch, not supplying voltage to the voltmeter while cranking. It obviously is supplying voltage to the voltmeter when you let off on the key after it starts, so the rest of the wiring must be ok. ----OR--- the voltmeter is grounded through something other than a true system ground (wired wrong). An example would be if it were grounded to the neutral start switch or something of that nature.

Attach another volt meter to the studs on the back of the guage and see if it reacts the same way, should tell you if it is the guage or the wiring.
