Is there any way i can run a toggle switch to operate my ignition power. and also my starter. I know that i would need two toggles.

I know this isnt the best idea, and only want to do this as a temp fix until I can tune my engine. This is kinda a test drive boat before I buy.

Switch is broke. want some way to use a toggle to send the power, and to trigger my starter.

what wires would i use at the switch?

It is rather obvious that you know nothing about the electrical system on that motor, or even outboards in general. There is nothing wrong with that, but you have some studying to do. Do you know how to read a wiring diagram? It's kind of asking a lot to ask us to give you a complete education in one or two paragraphs.

I think you can disconnect the main engine harness under the cowl, the big plug, and then jump the starter solenoid. You will have to choke it to get it to stop.

If I read this correctly you have a problem with your ignition switch and want to do a temp fix by adding switches for the starter and one for the ignition. Not sure what tuning has to do with this.
By the time you pay for two adequate switches and jerk around trying to Jerry-rig them, you would be already miles ahead if you just bite the bullet, get a new OEM switch and install it.

My 2 cents worth.

Of course, if you have not actually bought it yet, insist on the owner fixing it before you buy it.

Two switches are not enough, you need at least four to get full keyswitch functionality. Be sure to get marine-grade switches, automotive will wear out in a hurry. Switches rated for AC will not last long in DC circuits. 20 amps at 12VDC should be more than adequate.

1. ignition, on/off toggle, black wire on one post, black/yellow on the other, open to run, closed to kill.
2. start, normally off momentary, red/purple on one post, yellow/red on the other.
3. choke, your choice on/off toggle or normally off momentary. Purple/white and red/purple.
4. accessory power, on/off toggle, red/purple and purple.

A single double pole, double throw (DPDT) switch and two pushbuttons is sufficient to start, stop and choke that motor.

If you are just testing, disconnect the boat harness, operate the primer manually and jumper the starter solenoid to get her started. Choke it to stop.

How do you stop it? I thought there is usually a magneto connection at the ignition switch too? All of the above sounds logical, I just seem to recall something about a magneto connection when replacing a switch (which I think would be the best thing to do).

[edit] After re-reading jtexas's post, this must be his #1, the ignition circuit.

Aftermarket switch with 2 keys is $25, you'd be lightyears ahead just to buy a proper switch, like the rest have said.

gearheadperkins was looking for a temporary workaround -- Daviet's suggestion was obviously the easiest. I hate it when I ask "how", and the answer comes back, "don't" especially if it's not all that complicated. If gearhead's garage is anything like mine he prolly has all kinds of switches on hand already.

All that stuff in bins in my garage...I keep telling the wife it's not about the cost -- it's about time and space. When I need it, I need it here instead of down the hardware store, or the parts dealer.

That's how I used to think... But with a Lowe's, 2 Home Depots, and 2 Ace Hardwares all within 6 miles, I decided to let them store my excess inventory. I used to be like I'm not sure if I need this or that, so I'd buy both and keep the one I didn't use. Now I buy this, that and the other thing, and return what I did not use (since, if I'm not actually going to the store, I'm driving past it multiple times per week). I'm sure if I added up how much I have ties up in "extra stuff' I could buy a new motor. But yeah, I get where you are coming from... It's very satisfying to use something that's been laying around for ever.

BTW, this was a very interesting thread. It's always good to know how to hot-wire your boat. I bought an extra key, then realized I need a safety. Well safety is like $15, so now stashed under the console are the parts to jumper the safety just in case I have to use the spare key. I was actually thinking of wiring in a switch, in parallel, but decided against it.

Thanks again for all for posted. Well between work and personal life I havent had the time to try and do it, but I bought the boat anyway. So just as soon as i have time I will hook it up. thanks again.
