V6 gearcase parts compatability

I've got two bad V6 lower units. One appears to be a '96 or newer based on the water pickup. The older one has the snap-ring behind the prop shaft bearing housing, the newer one does not.

What I plan to do is move the driveshaft, pinion, clutch dog, forward and reverse gears, and prop shaft from the newer gearcase (which is cracked), into the older one (which has lost reverse), and end up with a functional lower unit.

Will there be any issues with doing this?

What about going to Shop Evinrude. com and comparing part #'s between the two different g/c's. Everything may be the same as they only came out with a different way of retaining the prop shaft housing. Just a thought. Also when you go to Shop Evinrude look at a 1990 model 150tlesb. Thats where they made a change in the housings. Gears and ect look to be the same.
