I just bought A boat with a mercury thunderboalt 40 hp not shure of the year. The boat runs fine but when I put it in reverse the motar comes out of the water. I know it is the reverse lock and I was told you could adjust the rod going to the lower unit but what I need to know is can I adjust the rod without the motar running by just putting it in reverse then adjusting it

Thanks Russell

Re: Mercury thunderbolt rervers lock

Probably what happened is someone dropped the LU to change the impeller or whatever and didn't align the reverse lock cam properly. It sits on top of the shift shaft and engages the lock when you put the motor in reverse. I'd have someone put the engine in reverse and see if the locking rod moves. It should engage the transom clamp. If not ,then I'll bet thats your problem.
