I have a 25 hp Evinrude when I changed the lower end grease it had water in it. Should I be concerned and if so what should I do to fix it? Any and all help is appreciated. I t is also missing a vented cover on the side of the lower part of the motor looks like where water enters the motor?

Re: water in oil

To be straight, there is reason for water in your lower unit. That is a "sealed unit" & you do not want any signs of water in there. I expect when draining oil out came a milky looking substance, this is not good. Gears are not getting proper lubrication. You may have a cracked lower unit or was the lower unit recently taken off? If so it may be a matter of it not being installed properly or could be a seal.
As far as a missing screen, yes replace it. It is there to prevent any object from entering your cooling system & damaging it. Good Luck

Re: water in oil

The most common cause of water in the gearcase is failure to replace the gaskets under the drain/fill and vent plugs every time.

Those are not washers; they are use-once gaskets.

Give her new gaskets and try her out.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB and raveon for the info I will head out tomorrow am and get the gaskets. I will have to order the screen.
Previous owner had water pump put on recently.
Shouldn't the carb have some sort of filter infront if it this one is open

Thanks again

You won't find air filters on marine engines due to the clean/dust free environment they operate in. Best of luck. Rick.

thanks the gaskets fixed it
I have a aluminum 15' boat it looks like it used to be decked, if I redeck it can I put some kind of foam to help stabalize or offset the weight of the wooden decking it would be approx 1 1/2 inch or so would that be enough to help and do I leave the drain galleys open or let the water go on top? I appreciate any and all help as always

Maybe, and when those 2 gaskets solve the problem that's great.

But there are a couple of other causes of water getting into a gearcase, and it has not been very long....it takes a while unless there is a really major leak or a crack in the housing.

Give it a few weeks or a month and then check for water again. If there is none, you win! I've got my fingers crossed for you...:)

On the boat deck, you might want to repost that question in the boat building/repair section to take advantage of the specialised expertise in there.

Foam would have to be placed under the boat, not the deck, to offset the weight. Drain galleys must remain open and leave a cut out near your drain plug and you might want to add a bilge back there as well. Rick.
