My boat has had a motor swap prior to me taking ownership and the tach was never hooked up. Does any one have a wiring diagram on a 77 evinrude 85hp v4? Or something that can help me get this tach hooked up.

See attached

grey=sensor
black=grd
purple=switched 12vdc

Your controller may have a three pin plug ... a mating harness is available from any BRP Evinrude dealer.

I went out and looked at the box and there is no plug. What will be the best way to splice in to the wires?

The black and purple wires will be inside the box. You'll have to find/run the grey direct to the tach.

The gray wire is taped off inside the lower cover of the control.

Re: Tach wiring question

Having the same issue as the OP but on a 91 E115. On the back of tach (on dash) the gray and purple are cut. I am having difficulty understanding where these wires connect.

Sorry to interject.

The tach may be labeled sense (grey), 12vdc (purple) and gnd (black).

Re: Tach wiring question

Terminal block on the engine, but the gray wire runs through the main harness to the helm. It's usually not connected to anything there except the tachometer or a plug for the tachometer.

In the case of the standard side mounted remote, a three wire amphenol plug is prewired on the control case for the tachometer. http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc_pics/REMCONTBOX.jpg
