My Tilt & Trim runs up and down ok, but it will not stay up, fall down pretty fast. Does it just need the orings replaced or might it be something else.

Could be air in the system, loose manual release, loose line fitting, pitted rams, or failing piston seals.

Check for air in the system (add fluid) and a tight manual release first.

It's fairly straightforward if you have the factory service manual, a few necessary tools and the repair kits.

Re: 1977 Johnson 140HP Tilt & Trim Question

If the problem is in the manifold, 0393942. If the problem is in the tilt cylinder, 0390007. If the problem is the trim rams: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=237028&highlight=trim+cylinder+seal+kit

You still could have leakage around one or more of the valves.

my guess is that it is not the trim rams, maybe manifold or the tilt cylinder is my guess, because it only falls down from full up until it stops at the trim rams.

by the way thanks for all the help

From what I remember it was the tilt/trim release valve in the valve body of the unit. Get yourself an OEM maual so you can see how to take it apart. Look for this valve in the manual. It's a needle pointed valve which has been up dated over the years. This was the biggest culprit back in those days causing the prob you have now.
