Yesterday I went to look at an outboard motor on a huge pontoon boat. The owner was willing to sell just the motor, and responded to my "wanted to buy" ad on craigslist. Sounded good on the phone, and when I got there the wife came out and was showing me the boat. She mentioned that one of the fiberglass pontoons had been damaged while moving the boat from driveway to back yard (using a back hoe or something like that). She points out the damage and said she had got an estimate to patch it for $100 from some local boat shop.
$100???? There is a 3 foot long horizontal and 2 foot vertical rip/puncture in the fiberglass pontoon. You could smuggle illegals in there! I told her no way is that going to be fixed for $100, as it would cost more than that materials alone.
I can't believe people think that ANYTHING boat related can be fixed for $100, either that or she thought she saw a sucker standing in her yard.
Anyway, I know why they moved the boat, the lower unit was leaking like a sieve. Found a puddle of milky gear oil in the driveway, and the lower unit was wraped in heavy plastic, tied just above the gear case. The rest of the motor was not wrapped.
Oh well, it was good for a laugh, thought I'd share.
