I have a 1977 Evinrude 35
Model# 35753H
had it out last weekend and had no isues at all:) so i thought i would be a great dad and hubby n take the family out fishing today:cool: boy did i let everyone down (even myself) first of all i get it into the water and cant shift it into gear so my wife gets out and it all of the sudden starts shifting again so i tell her to get back in we are ready to go i start it back up put in gear and the prop dont spin in forward or reverse
So i thought it would be a great time to fish from shore:(

Any thoughts of what to look for:confused: i pulled off the prop and all of the teeth around it and the shaft are good so i guess i have to go deeper i found ths site

with the parts list i was hoping it was just a sheer pin or something
what should i look for when i take it apart

No shear pin in that motor. If it is not shifting, something has come loose in the linkage, from Shift lever, on down. Can't tell from here, you will just have to examine it.

Um.....you DO have oil in the lower unit, don't you?

Its the prop! The shaft is spinning in the prop you need a new hub kit for your prop!

UM, no, a spun hub needs to be under power to start spinning, if the prop won't turn at a stop there is another problem, if it was bad enough to not spin at all I think it would fall off.

People actually do what we tell them to do so if you aren't very sure of your answer maybe wait for someone else to chime in, I think I know the answer alot but don't post because I am not sure.

The first thing I would do is drain the lower oil, alot of times it will tell you alot.

If it is milky white you have a water leak, if there are metal shavings it is probably a part.

If you don't have an OMC manual do your self a favor and do not take it apart, it is pretty complicated and you ned specials tools to do it.

Drain the oil and post the results and we will go from there.

Re: prop is not spinning

you can't turn the prop shaft at all?

Does it want to spin the engine or it just won't turn?

Can you turn the engine over by hand?

If it won't turn and doesn't spin the engine it is a pretty major failure I would say, a lower has 3 gears and a clutch dog, the gears are always in contact and turning if the engine is running, the clutchdog slides back and forth to select the gear you want.

If it won't turn at all that would inidcate there is something caught between a couple gear teeth or something of that nature.

I have rebuilt several lowers and getting them apart is the easy part, it is putting htem back together correctly that is the problem, a little too much play between the gears or not enough and it won't last long.

I am not telling you not to pull it apart just be careful, thre si alot of stuff in there and without a manual it can be a challenge.

You can pull the bearing carrier on the back pretty easily and that will get you a lookionside to maybe see what is going on, mine is different but had 3 bolts and you will need to fashion some kind of puller to get it out.

Did you check the shift rod connector to make sure that the screws are holding it correctly?
