I recently bought an older jon boat (1988) with a mercury 25hp 2 cycle motor. The motor looks in decent shape. The seller told me they were using it last about 5 years ago, motor ran fine for about 30 mins till they stopped to fish. When it was time to go back the motor wouldn't start again.

Here's what i've done so far. Cleaned out the fuel filter, checked fuel pump, checked for proper spark. The carb appears clean from looking in the top of it. The motor will turn over when i choke it and pull crank, but then putters out and dies before i am able to adjust choke/idle speed. Any ideas for another part to clean out or check?

Sounds like the carb is clogged. Is their just one carb on it? Does it have a float bowl? I dont know to much about boat engines but from my mower experience this would be something with the carb.

Have somebody squeeze the primer bulb while you start it.
Try rebuilding the carb.

What year is the Merc. Serial Number? First Compression check.
rebuiding the carb and fuel pump, parts. will cost about 50 bucks if you can do it yourself. Are you using fresh gas/oil mixture/ clean tank?
