Is is possible to do a compression check on a 150 hp fast start johnson that is not running? I am just looking to get some indication of the condition of the motor before buying something that is not operable.

Thx for your input

Yes, will the starter work? Remove the plugs and test the compression.

Yes the starter will work. How much compression should it have?

I am not sure on that engine, they don't list compression specs. I would think that if you had 100 psi or better, and all within 10% of each other, you would be ok. I am sure that someone will come along and have better numbers for you.

Re: compression check 150 Fast Strike

thx for the info. The current problem with the motor is that one of magnets came off and damaged the stator. Can these magnets be reattached to the flywheel?

thx again

I don't work on those big engines, but I think I have read on this forum that there is a kit to reattach the magnets.

Al is correct they do sell an epoxy kit for the magnets...if the one that came loose is still good and intact you can re-aattach it..if not you can buy magnets i believe

BUT..if the magnet damaged the stator then you may be looking at 2-300 bucks for a new one and if it were me..I would get that off the sell price..

There is also a timer base to consider under there as well... that too is 200 or so dollars...

That being said.. if compression is 100-150 on all cylinders with deviations within 10% then you should be ok. Keep in mind this doesnt tell you anything about the rest of the engine..water pump, stats, and other components.

If you could talk him down 5-700 bucks you could cover yourself a bit to get that engine going again..doesnt mean you wont spend more after but you will at least have a cushion

Definitely will have to get a discount if I buy it. Thanks for mentioning the timer base. Did not know that was there.

Thx
