Hi All,
I am making repairs to my V-135 Merc Blackmax, 1985. This is a 2stroke V6.
It was running rough at Idle and I traced the fault to corrosion on the ignition terminal coils and one coil had completely come off.
I also discovered 2 of the coils had been overtightened and the ferrite cores had been cracked.
I have replacement coils and I am about to reassemble the motor now.
When I removed the coils there was some residue of white pasty substance underneath some of them.
My question is: Should I be putting anything under the coils where they bolt onto the exhaust manifold cover plate? I am thinking RTV silicon, dielectric grease or Mercury's anticorosive grease. If I don't put anything then the first drip of saltwater is going to be pulled under the coils and start corroding the exhaust cover.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mike
