Just picked up one of these at a yard sale for $10.00.Appears to have good compression and looks like it was stored indoors.I believe it to be an early 50's model.
The gearcase appears to have been packed with bearing grease rather than gear lube.Is this normal?
Any insight on this motor would be appreciated.

Thanks,Charlie.

Here's a data page for Champions:

If it uses the Tillotson MD carb here's adjustment & service info:

If it's old enough it's possible--even likely--that it used waterproof grease rather than 90 wt. Hypoid oil. That was common practice on non-shift older motors. If so the modern equivalent is Lubriplate # 105 'Assembly Grease'.
Equally likely is that someone used grease in place of 90 wt. because the seals were leaking and that was---and still is---the work-around to replacing the seals. If you follow suit just be sure to drain the water a few times each season and for sure before putting it away for a winter sleep. L/Us ruptured by ice formation caused by leaving water in them is one of the most commonly found problem in classics and antiques. HTH, Tom

So, what model Champion Blue Ribbon do you have anyway? Easier to answer questions if that is known.
