My Merc is an some what old 60hp 3 cyl 2 stroke.

When I try to start it, it seems to fire once, do a twist, and halts -as if it is fireing backwards.
-----------------------------------------
I now suspect the exhaust canal/outlet to be clogged. Is this a plausible cause?
If a 2-stroke engine can't get rid of the exhaust, it can't get any new fuel in -right?

How do I check if the exhaust canal/outlet is open and free?
Apply compressed air in the cylinder chamber, with the piston half way down, and blow through the exhaust system?

Is it possible to split the propeller house from the drive shaft, and inspect the exhaust canal?

Exaust restriction doesnt sound very likeley.....check basics, spark, compression, then i believe i would look for a sheared flywheel key. The magnets on that flywheel are a possible cause on the newer models because they are glued onto the flywheel, if the motor has a one piece hood this may be the case and you can usually peek up under the flywheel to check the magnets. Usually there is some sign of debris from the damaged magnet on top of the engine block.
Hope this helps
