Hey, I'm new to the forums so I'd just like to say Hi!....

Anyways, I have a 1977 Johnson 85HP outboard with model number 85EL77S and VIN # J4756059. While repairing the cylinder on the port side of the boat, we lost something (We are not sure what was lost, that's why I'm here) that stops the cylinder from its upward motion when it is all the way up. So basically, when we tilt the motor up if we go to far the cylinder will pop right out. Our question is, what did we lose? And is there anywhere we can get another cylinder?

The cylinder I'm referring to is for the trim and tilt system. I hope this makes sense to someone, lol....Oh, and the motor is on a 1979 Glastron.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Take a look at the parts breakdown of your system and see what you are missing.

Where can I find a parts breakdown?

And is there replacement cylinders available? It's a old unit so I would guess not but I'm not sure.

Ok that was very helpful, thank you.

Now my question goes to a mechanical point of view, what exactly stops the piston (or cylinder, not sure what the proper name is) from popping out of its housing? That is the problem we are running into.

I used this page which was an exact match for our trim and tilt system:
http://www.ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp/AsplIsmCcatViewBase.jsp?&lvlCode=5&pCode=C0206000&path=BRP~A0000008~M0011744~M0011759~M0011760~C0206000&isFromCMS=false&hideAdd2CartButton=&isStandAlone=&is4CmsShop=&reqln=Unknown&reqem=Unknown&reqph=Unknown&reqFor=29&req4Browse=1&docId=&docName=&isForSupStore=false&cCatFilter=&eCatSupFldr=

We see this part on that page:
31 0122542 1 EA 16.62 STOP, Piston rod

Could that be it?

Thanks again for any help!

Click the thumbnail for a graphic of the trim cylinder.

Be sure that the bearing is on before you replace the stop. Use thread lock on the threads and tighten securely.
