without takin it apart, how can you tell if the lower unit is in good condition? the purchase of a complete boat depends on the condition of the l.u. .if it were to be bad ,how much should i expect to spend for repairs or replacement worst case senario?

You are correct as far as LU being in good condition. Worst case it would cost about $1300 to replace the LU.

more questions fellas. what ways can water get into lower unit? no metal shavings that i see,but there was water intrusion. i have the model number which is e120txarc, the way i read this it is a 1994 120hp w 25" shaft and elect start w tilt and trim. does this seem right? how hard is it to change the tilt /trim motor?
