Well the starter on my 1960 merc 300 has finally gone bad. It seems to be a burned or broken wire inside of the coils someplace. I cleaned the brushes and no help/ Question is just WHERE do I find another one at a good price. thanks for any help.

Re: I need a starter

I may have to try and get it rebuilt but I know that will cost mucho denero. I hope to get it replaced for less than 100 bucks but I have no idea of what it will cost, Even a good used one is OK.

Re: I need a starter

Any good motor shop will rebuild it for less than a good used one and a lot less than a new one.

Re: I need a starter

Update,Thanks for the good advice. I found a local place today that said rebuilding it would be no problem and should have it back within 48 hours. Cost estimate around 90 bucks and as I was told much cheaper than a new one IF I COULD FIND IT.. thanks again

I also need a starter

I also need a starter

I have a 1960 Merc300 Thunderbolt Kiekhaefer engine and I also need a starter - not only does it not throw out, but one of the mounting "ears" is broken off of it (looks like someone tried to JB-Weld it back on).

I'm hoping I don't have to pay $300 for one here:

... as I paid $600 for the entire boat, and I'm on a pretty tight budget. I would be happy to find a used working, or perhaps even non-working one as long as the housing is intact. Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks!
