First off I would like to say hello and I love the site. Now to move on to my question. I have an 86 evinrude 140 that had a lower unit leak it started bangin real loud so I drained the remainder of the fluid it had alot of water in it. I got the LU welded and put new fluid in it but unfortunately I believe the damage has been done it works fine in reverse but throw it in forward and it acts like it has a stripped gear.can I just buy a new gear or am up the creek without a paddle? I dont know a whole lot about boats and ive only taken out a LU one time. Any info would be greatly apreciated

Go to the OEM website and look up your engine and look at the breakdown for the lower unit, it will show you what parts available.

Won't know what you need until you get it apart. Was there any metal in the oil/water mix that came out? That's the sure sign of chewed up gears...

It's a guessing game till you tear it down and look. Suggest an OEM manual in your possession before you start though.
