I have a 1954 10hp Johnson. The engine coughs at idle and runs smooth at more throttle. Any suggestions on where I should start?

Open the low speed adjustment a little at a time and see if the cough stops.

This can happen when one cylinder is not firing. A reason for not firing might be bad sparkplug.

You also might check the condition of the coils. Make sure the insulation isn't cracked. If these ignition systems are reconditioned right, they deliver enough spark to send a bull elephant flying across the street and make the motor easy to start. I hear guys on here say that the 54 model like you have is a great motor and has good power for a 10hp.;)
