I've got a 1969 40 horse johnson electromatic superquiet, when I turn the ket to the on position, the electric choke works, but i turn the key to engage the motor and i got nothing, if I leave the key to the on position I can pull start it and it runs great, turn the key off, shuts the motor off, that works great, kill switch also works great, I give the starter power from a battery and cables to test it and it engages, so is my problem in my ignition switch?

Re: starting

Sure sounds like it's the switch going bad. Could be a little corrosion inside or a loose connection outside. Try some penetrating oil inside the switch, it may do the trick (for a while).

Re: starting

so I went and got a new switch, every boat store here gives me a different one, this time they gave me one for johnson 1977 through 1995 and all the stores say it should work? and mine is a 1969, hooked it up still nothing, so im gonna buy a new battery since i need one anyway, still frustrated, i can put the key and every thing is fine, turn the key off motor off, thats great ,all i want to do is start it with a key, any suggestions :(

Re: starting

Have you checked voltage through the neutral safety switch to the starter solenoid when you turn the key to start?

Re: starting

no i havent where is that located, is it to the left of the shift linkage and does it look like the backside bottom of the starter solenoid looks like it has some wires going into it and a vacuum line?

Re: starting

If memory serves there is a micro switch up under the magneto near the cutout switch. There should be a white wire going from the safety switch to the cutout then to the solenoid. The switch functions off of a ground , test the switch to make sure it's not permanently grounded out.

Re: starting

This might help, not sure if it is exact match but wiring convention should be the same. When key is turned to on, M to M open, B to A close. Turn to start, B to S close. The buzzer is added to the A terminal and lanyard is added to kill terminal (raised M). If you jump B to S starter will turn (momentary only).

Re: starting

Ignore the C & A terminal, the concept is the same. Kill wire is grounded when off, M to M closed, turning to run opens M to M, turning to start closes B to S giving starter juice until key is released. Be it a 4, 5, 6 pole switch, they all work the same. To test switch, clip red lead from voltmeter to S and black lead to any ground(low M terminal can be used for ground not raised M terminal), turn key to start, good switch will read 12V dc. Or with grounded test light to S, turning key will light with good switch. Assuming battery is good.

Re: starting

It is a pretty good wild guess that the safety switch is shot. And if it is shot, it is a pretty safe bet that somebody has put a car solenoid in there. That will instantly destroy the safety switch.

EDIT: So will using a remote starting button if connected to the wrong small terminal on the solenoid. ZZZZT!, and the safety switch is toast.

it never had a solenoid in it when i got the motor, the first thing i did was get the correct one from the dealer,i did notice all my white wires to my switch were in bad shape the insulation is just fallin off the wire and the wire is badly corroted so i will get new wire and replace it all.

Check every wire throughout the whole wiring harness. If it is all that bad, your problems will continue. Use tinned copper wire to replace it, solder and heat shrink all connections.
