we have a brand new rebuilt 3.8l v6 gm motor in our 17 foot glassply, we were replacing a 4 cylinder volvo. What gear ratio should i have in my lower unit? 215, 189, or 161? I know the 189 is supposed to be used with a v6, but volvo put out a 3.8 and used the 161 v8 gears? just need to make sure before we purchase. Any advantage to using the v8 gears? any info would help. by the way the new engine is putting out about 170 hp.

I would use what Volvo used, 1.61, V8 gearing. You could try a different prop, 23p perhaps. Maybe you could get by without changing the gearing. Might be worth a try...Watch your RPM.

If not, I think I'd look for a complete used outdrive. Or just a good Lower unit. What outdrive do you have?
