I replaced the spring in the recoil for a 1959 5.5hp Elgin and the instructions I have say to use a special tool to wind the spring CCW.I do not have this tool and was wondering if anyone out there has a easy method to wind that spring.
Thanks,
Gary

"special tool" huh? Use a 1/4-20 bolt and nut. Screw it into the starter spindle and jam the nut down to lock it all together. Then go ahead and wind it up, using a wrench on the bolt head.

Thanks for tip. Using that bolt worked. I'm going to have to start thinking more outside the box. I got that spring wound and works but now when I pull the rope the starting gear does not slide up and engage the fly wheel. I know I got it back together correctly. Any more suggestions?
