Rust Stains?

Realize that I won't get rid of them, but a any removal would be an improvement, the PO of my boat left something steel sitting on the bimini top in storage and since it was rolled up, it telegraphed through a number of layers, so now there is a series of matching rust stains and they look very ugly!:(

Re: Rust Stains?

I'm not sure if this will work for you or not. I'm going to put this out there though because this stuff is awesome. The PO of my boat never cleaned the hull so I had an aweful looking waterline. My wife and I scrubbed the hull of the boat with so many different things trying to get the hull to look somewhat clean but it would never come off. Anyways, fastforward a few months and I'm at a bass tournament and this guy ask's me why I havent cleaned the hull of my boat. I tell him that my wife and I have numerous times but just can't seem to get it to come off. Then he tells me about RustAid. It took me forever to find it but Home Depot had it tucked away in the Paint Department. He told me to take it full strength and put it on a rag and just wipe it on the hull, no scrubbing required. He said let it sit for about five minutes and then wash it off with the water hose. Now, I'm skeptical at first about this because we have spent hours literally scrubbing the bottom of this boat so I picked a spot under my transom and wiped it on and let it sit for a few minutes. I was shocked at the outcome. The hull looked brand new when I washed it off. I put it on the rest of the boat and it ate the stuff right off. There was a couple spots that I had to wipe it on it three times before it got it completly off but I didn't have to scrub that hull again.

Anyways, I said all that to say this, we use it on all kinds of stuff now. I've never tried it on a material before but I personally would try it to see what it would do because this stuff is unreal.

PS. Added before and after pictures of the hull.

Since RustAid is basically a strong acid, it would not only remove the rust stain in the bimini top but would also leave a nice huge hole!

Yeah, I'm thinking the rust stains still look better than big holes, there has to be some secret remedy?

Might want to try some lemon juice or vinegar. Not sure how that would affect the color of the top though.

What is the top made of? If it's a polyester or a solution-dyed acrylic like Sunbrella, rust removers with hydrofluoric acid (like the RustAid linked earlier) will not harm it a bit. If it's a dyed cotton canvas, the canvas itself won't be harmed, though the color might.

Another great product is called RustAway. I buy it at Publix supermarket. Google it. It works instantly on rust stains no scrubbing.

Another common one that works well is Iron Out. It's sodium hydrosulfite and sodium bisulfite. It also works extremely well on lime deposits.

Cool, I love this place. I think its all synthetic, feels like it anyway, it came with the boat and no info.

I used lemon juice, a brush and elbow grease to take rust rings out of my carpet when someone used a coffee can filled with cement for an anchor. The lemon juice and brush weakened/diluted the rust and spread it out a little. I then just used a paper towel to soak up the rust. Took it all out. The rust wasn't fresh either.

We use a product called Whink rust remover. Works well, never discolored any of our fabrics , but it is used on our clothes, polyester, cotton, rayon.....and it worked on my dacron sails too.

I know everything is on the web, but I trust experience over marketing hyperbole. Of course all products work like advertised, right?

No, and most of the suggestions in here are for products that people have tried with good results....but for slightly different purposes than your current need.

What I have found...from experience...and it is simply logical, is that when you find a specialty business operating in its own niche, and it matches your problem, they usually have a lot of acquired experience AND expertise which they are happy to share with their customers to help them find a solution.

If it were my boat top that was stained I would call them just to see what they could offer; doesn't cost anything.

I was not shilling for any product, just offering another option. Sorry for wasting your time.

Don't be so sensitive, isn't that what this site is for, getting answers from people that know? Yes I could spend several days or more searching for websites, sending emails(most of which, get no replies) and calling companies and going from one person to another to try and find someone that works there that actually knows the answer. Believe me, I used to do that for my job. I don't think many businesses are going to recommend lemon juice a some scrubbing.

Not sure that I'm being sensitive. I posted what I thought was a reasonable idea which you dumped on.

If it had been " www.thecleaningstore.com " I would not have bothered posting the link.
A store that specialises in rust treatment and removal just MIGHT have a few ideas of their own.
And they have a toll free number. You can make a phone call as fast as posting in here.

If you think I "dumped" on you, then you are being overly sensitive. I only said that I don't believe everything works as advertized. Do you? Plus I thought, that since I had question about rust removal, others did to and by posting it here we ALL could learn something. Is that wrong?
