My 64 johnson 40 hp runs great ,finally, so when I took it out I was disappointed when after about 10 minutes it would no longer stay in the forward gear. it will go into reverse just great but when i try to move it forward the shift lockout lever rattles like crazy and I cannot even push it manualy into gear. could it just be the linkage or is the a bigger problem? the fact that it goes into reverse makes me think the linkage is ok?

Any metal in the lower unit oil?
Sounds like the clutch dog is not staying engaged in the forward gear, may need to open up the lower unit.

Has the lower unit been removed lately? Sounds like the shift linkage may have come loose.

Yes, I think there is a little in there. I have read a bunch of posts on similar issues. I actually have a spare lower unit, condition is fair (i think) I am just debating if I should take the lower unit apart. Is everything going to "spring" out once it is opened? Also, from what I have read you should not ease it into gear, is that correct? Thanks for the post!!!

Look at the parts breakdown, not as hard a job as you might think.
You should snap it into gear, easing it into gear will let the clutch dog bounce on the ears of the forward gear.

Re: 1964 40hp johnson pops out of gear

Sorry for the delay, had this put up for awhile. Replaced the shift lever in the lower unit because it was worn down, gears all loooked good and put everything back together. By the way this is a 62 not a 64. Runs great but still cannot shift into forward gear. This is a pic of the shift lever on top. to meet the middle postion that it is on should be nuetral but that is reverse. I cannot seem to go forward enough to engage the forward gear. I have tried to adjust the shift rod as much as I can ( at least I think). Is there an adjustment up here or is this the correct location for reverse gear?

When you installed the lower unit did you get the shift rod all the way into the connector so that the bolt went through the slot in the shift rod?
