How do I adjust the idle speed on my Johnson 88 SPL? It is a 1989 MY engine.

Is there a separate idle circuit in the carbs that can be adjusted, or do I just adjust the main throttle plates via the cable adjustment.

The engine runs great at high RPM, but only idles at about 500 RPM and frequently stalls at idle.

There is a idle adjustment screw on the starboard side of the block. The parts breakdown will show it to you.

At idle the carb butterflys are closed and are not adjustable. The idle rpm is determined by the idle timing. For increased rpm, increase the idle timing by screwing in on the big screw on the spark lever. You want to set the engine idle to 650-750 rpm when idling, floating at normal level, in the water.
