I recently inherited a 2003 Tracker boat, model Pro Guide V16. The boat is equipped with a 2003, 40hp Mercury, 2 stroke, 2 cyl. The prop is part number 48 815 704 A40 13P.
I filled the boat with gas, about 20 gallons. Took it for a test ride. I was the only person in the boat with no gear. The boat would not plane. The RPM was about 4500, max is 5500 RPM. I rplaced the plugs.
After a long ride and reducing the gas to 1/2 tank I finally got up on plane with 4700 RPM and 20 MPH.
A marine dealer suggested a 11 pitch prop.
Do you think the boat is underpowered.

check the hullplate--what is the max HP? A 40 sounds a little light but I don't know that boat.

I have a 2002 Lund Rebel 1650 ss, it has a 40hp Four Stroke yamaha with a 13p prop. It is a little underpowered but it is not to bad. I am putting a 11p prop on it shortly and see what that does. It is a little sluggish out of the hole and tops out at 28 mph with one person and 26 mhp with two pple. I am hoping the 11 pitch will help the hole shot and maybe keep the same speed. It turns 5100rpm with two pple. My boat is 16.5ft long and a beam of 76 inches i think, it is susposed to weigh like 675 dry and no motor. I dont know how similar this is to yours but I would think you should be to at least plane the boat out.

Don't know if this will help but. I had a 16ft tin mod V hull, FLAT BOTTOM 40hp. 10 1/8X15P prop. 5200-5300rpm anyway 15gl tank full, me and a friend both around 250 live well full, and gear and it would run 32 to 34 depending on surface and wind.

Re: Poor Performance Tracker Boat

I just bought a 2009 Tracker Pro V16 with a 40 HP Mercury EFI 4 stroke o/b. Full fuel tank and 2 adult men I was able to get 22mph @ 5800rpm. Boat doesn't feel like it's planing but the deep hull displaces a lot of water. I called Tracker dealer and they said this is about what is expected for a boat of this type and engine configuration.

Welcome to iboats! :D

How is the motor mounted? I am specifically thinking about the trim angle. If the trim is in too far you will plow water and not achieve full rpms

You might want to invest a few nickels into one of those sting rays for the anti-cav plate. We've put one on every single planing boat we own and we have seen performance increases in every instance from a 28hp to a 150.
